  • Twenty-two week (22) Basic Law Enforcement Academy, located in Tucson
  • Ten-week (10) Field Training Program
  • Eighteen-month (18) probation period, beginning at the start of the police academy

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 21 years of age (at time of appointment)
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license (at time of hire)
  • Registered voter in Pima County (at time of hire)
  • United States citizen
  • Be of excellent character
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
  • If Prior Military: Must have been honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • No felony convictions
  • No unlawful use of a narcotic or dangerous drug within the past seven (7) years
  • No unlawful use of marijuana within the past three (3) years
  • No pattern of drug abuse
  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
 
Hiring Process
  • Multiple Choice Test: 100 items, two (2) hour test. The top applicants from this test are invited to the physical fitness test.
  • Physical Fitness Test: Coopers Test consisting of sit-ups, push-ups, flexibility, and a 1.5-mile run. This is a Pass/Fail test. Click here for a list of standards. Applicants who pass are scheduled for an oral board interview the following week.
  • Oral Board Interview
  • Polygraph/Background screening
  • Executive Review: The Executive Review Board identifies applicants for hire contingent upon passing post-offer psychological testing and interview, a medical examination to include drug screening, an intense background investigation and a final review.

Salary & Benefits
  • Salary Range: $42,099 to $59,238
    (Effective January 6, 2008)
