The Pima County Sheriff's Department’s Bomb Squad consists of four bomb technicians. The sergeant and two of the deputies are currently certified through the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama. The fourth member is scheduled to attend the five-week certification school in January 2005. One technician is assigned full-time to Special Operations, while the other three work full-time assignments elsewhere in the department. These three respond to call-outs on an as-needed basis. The Squad trains sixteen-hours each month and also trains with SWAT three days during the year on “explosive breaching.” Technicians must recertify with the FBI every three years.
The Bomb Squad responds to all calls related to potentially explosive ordnance within the unincorporated areas of Pima County and also provides assistance to area law enforcement agencies that do not have a bomb squad. The Bomb Squad responds to all SWAT calls to provide assistance through the use of the Remotec Andros 6A robot and to assist with possible explosive entries. They provide instruction at the regional law enforcement academy and bomb threat seminars; assist with dignitary protection by conducting protective sweeps prior to the dignitary's arrival and package screening during the visit; and also conduct fireworks inspections and issues blaster's permits for Pima County.
The Squad currently has one large response vehicle that houses the robot and other large pieces of equipment, and two new Ford F-350, four door, 4-wheel-drive trucks which are outfitted as quick-response vehicles. These new trucks are assigned to two of the technicians and contain enough equipment to handle minor call-outs.
