On November 22, 2008, at approximately 10:20am, a pack of approximately 60 bicyclists from the El Tour de Tucson were traveling westbound on Ina Road approaching Westward Look Drive. They were traveling with the green light when an eastbound traveling sedan turned northbound onto Westward Look Drive. Approximately 10 bicyclists were unable to avoid contact with the sedan. Five of those bicyclists were transported to local hospitals; one in critical condition. The suspect vehicle stopped; the driver got out of the vehicle and looked at the damage to his vehicle and the bicycles; he returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.
Witnesses describe the driver as a 6’ tall male, weighing approximately 190lbs, with gray (or dark) colored pants and shirt. He was also wearing steel-framed glasses and had short hair. The vehicle is described as a gold or silver, Honda or Toyota.
The person of interest in the incident has been identified through an attorney. At this time his name is not being released pending completion of the investigation. The Traffic Unit continues to investigate this incident through investigative leads and witnesses. Additional information may be forthcoming. |
